Situated on the island of Kvaløy it is the northernmost city of Europe. At this latitude (70° and 40 ' north) we find the northernmost lands of Alaska, of Siberia and of the centre of Greenland.

Here again the beneficial influence of the Gulf Stream mitigates the climate and prevents the freezing of waters. From mid-May to 29 July the sun always stays over the horizon, while from 21 November to 23 January the sun never rises and the night is endless.
