Situated on the island of Tromsøya, in front of the north western coast of the country, it is connected to the mainland by a bridge and a submarine tunnel.

Founded towards the half of the XIII century, the city was deserted in the XVI and inhabited again by the half of the XVIII century. There are 57,000 inhabitants today.
